After a search that lasted several hours, law enforcement officers were unable to locate a man wanted for a violent crime who fled on foot in Buxton on Friday night, officials said.

Buxton police assisted the U.S. Marshals Service in searching for a man with an active warrant whom they considered armed and dangerous, the Buxton Police Department said in a Facebook post.

Shortly after 7:40 p.m., police urged local residents to stay inside and lock their doors. But the department later said there was “no further information to lead law enforcement to believe the suspect is still in the area.”

The man, who has not been identified, fled on foot in the area of Parker Farm and Webster Roads, the department said. He is wanted for a crime committed in another jurisdiction, police said.

“Our K-9 team and several officers have saturated the area,” police wrote in the initial post.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call the dispatcher at 207-929-5151.
