No South Portland resident should have to take out a reverse mortgage to pay property taxes.
But that is exactly what Mayor Misha Pride offered as an option for senior citizens to consider, as the City Council seems incapable of exercising fiscal responsibility.
During the Aug. 13 City Council meeting where the assessor presented on the astronomical residential property tax increases. Mayor Pride stated – and this is a direct quote – “Seeing as our property values are so high, seniors may want to consider a reverse mortgage.”
His suggestion was met with an audible gasp from the audience.
That is an appalling suggestion coming from someone who has voted for tax increases every single year he has served on the council since 2018.
It is time for a change in District 3. Vote for challenger Robert Kierstead. I guarantee Kierstead won’t be suggesting reverse mortgages to pay taxes.
