The Maine Senate will reconvene on Oct. 10 to confirm appointees to various state boards and agencies, including nominees for state fire marshal and the health and human services commissioner.
It takes a two-thirds vote of the Senate to overturn a gubernatorial appointment.
Among the 21 people facing confirmation votes is Sara Gagné-Holmes, who is being tapped as the next commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services. The committee with jurisdiction over the department voted 10-2 in support of her appointment this month.
Gagné-Holmes, an attorney, former café owner and previous leader of the liberal advocacy group Maine Equal Justice Partners, is currently acting commissioner and has been the department’s No. 2 administrator for five years. She would replace Jeanne Lambrew, who resigned in May to take a position at a Washington, D.C., think tank and teach at Harvard University.
The Senate also is expected to take up Gov. Janet Mills’ appointment of Shawn Esler as the new fire marshal. The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee is scheduled to hold a public hearing on Esler’s appointment on Friday.
Other appointments include:
• Board of Pesticides Control: Curtis Bohlen, Robert S. Carlton, Phillip D. Fanning and Justin Gray
• Maine Land Use Planning Commission: Millard Billings and Perry A. Ellsworth
• State Harness Racing Commission: Harry B. Center II and Patricia A. Varnum
• University of Maine System Board of Trustees: Philip Hussey, Owen McCarthy, William Kemler and Elise M. Baldacci
• Maine District Court judge: Julia Greenleaf Pitney, Esq.; Harris A. Mattson, Esq.; and Judge Peter L. Darvin
• Active retired justice of the Superior Court: Justice MaryGay Kennedy
• Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices: Beth Ahearn, Esq.
