YORK – A tight race is forming in Class B volleyball. On Thursday, York made sure to keep pace.
The Wildcats earned their fourth straight victory and third sweep of the season, defeating Falmouth, 3-0. York took the sets by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-17, and is now 7-1 while Falmouth fell to 3-5.
“We had a slow start, and I think we just started settling in,” Coach Suzanne Bradley said. “We had a few too many missed serves, but we kind of controlled that in the second and third set a little bit more and brought our offense, our pass-set-hit game, which I think can be pretty good when we’re playing it the way we should be.”
Jill Holland and Brooke Roe led that hitting game, while Bradley credited Bella Parrotta’s role in setting and Maya Babcock’s and Lauren Chagnon’s defense with helping the Wildcats pull away.
“I think our serving was important,” Holland said. “When we started getting our serves back and really focusing, we started doing a lot better.”
York needed five sets to beat Kennebunk in its last game. On Thursday, Falmouth took an 8-3 lead in the second set, but with Chagnon and Roe serving York took command with a 12-1 run.
Falmouth narrowed a 20-11 deficit to 21-15 in the third, but three kills from Holland iced the win.
The win kept York near the top of a packed field atop Class B. The Wildcats entered the night tied at 6-1 with Yarmouth and Gardiner. Washington Academy is 7-0.
“You’ve just got to start playing up to them,” Holland said. “Focus on what your team needs to work on specifically, and have high energy when you play.”
