I applaud state Sen. Rick Bennett for his Sept. 10 op-ed “Massive corporate energy deal requires great scrutiny.” CMP/Avangrid’s abysmal electrical utility service record has resulted in Maine being ranked worst in the country for reliability and among the most expensive. Frequent power outages and long durations to restore power are health and safety issues for Mainers.
The Maine Public Utilities Commission must carefully scrutinize Iberdrola’s current proposal to assume full control of Avangrid, CMP’s parent company, and its implications for Maine customers. Avangrid Senior VP Kim Harriman’s op-ed response (“Avangrid case shouldn’t be used for political point-scoring,” Sept. 13) recommended that “the discourse and the decision should be left to the experienced experts at the Commission.” I disagree. I believe it is important that our Maine Public Utilities Commission hear not only from the Avangrid executive team in New York, but also from Mainers and our legislators about our concerns.
