A few days ago, I put up a Harris/Walz sign at the end of my driveway. To my surprise, it was gone in a couple of days, whereas another campaign sign was not disturbed.
A person who takes, defaces or disturbs a sign placed within the public right-of-way commits a civil violation for which a fine of up to $250 may be adjudged. For taking, removing or stealing signs from private property, a person could be charged with the Class E crime of “theft.”
Anyone who sees a campaign sign being stolen should please report the license number to the local police department.
I will be replacing the stolen sign with the hopes that my “freedom of speech” is honored.
