Laurence Joe Reinhartsen (“Larry”) died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in the hospital after experiencing an unexpected heart attack.
Larry was born on Aug. 1, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York, and was the son of the late Ray and Ruth Reinhartsen.
He is survived by: his wife, Maine artist Gretchen Langner; daughter, Maja Reinhartsen; stepdaughter, Rois Langner and her husband, Travis Scheefer; brother, Paul Reinhartsen; niece, Zoe Flowers; nephew, Karl Reinhartsen; grandchildren, Isabel and Hans Scheefer; and his ever-faithful dog, Hank.
Larry earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He spent 25 years as a tenant rights attorney in New York City before transitioning to a second career teaching gifted and talented middle school students in Maine public schools, predominantly in Saco. He had a deep love for teaching, and his students respected his commitment to fostering academic rigor and certainty, particularly in reading comprehension and math. He inspired them to think critically and bolstered their confidence in their academic abilities.
Teaching colleagues have expressed that Larry was “deeply dedicated to his students as well as to his subject matter, committed to ensuring that his students were challenged and came away from his classes with a deeper understanding of what they were learning.” Another colleague noted, “Many of his former students achieved high honors at the secondary level and often came back to share their successes with him.”
In addition to his commitment to education, Larry had a passion for political science, where he enjoyed sparking lively discussions that leaned toward progressive views. His appreciation for the arts and culture was profound, as he regularly attended the theater, opera, and symphony, and was an avid film enthusiast. He was also a regular at the gym, maintaining his Viking-like frame, and found great joy in riding his motorcycle.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Portland Public Library or to a nonprofit of your choice. Larry often made contributions to many progressive organizations. A memorial celebration will take place at a later date.
