With the Raiders and star wide receiver Davante Adams headed toward an imminent breakup, Coach Antonio Pierce did his best to sidestep the issue when he spoke to the media Wednesday.
Pierce said Adams continues to rehab from his hamstring injury, and the rest of the Raiders are focused on the Broncos, whom they play Sunday in Denver.
When asked if Adams would be at the Raiders’ facility, Pierce simply said: “He’s supposed to be rehabbing.”
Pierce did not comment on a report that he “liked” a social media post that suggested Adams had played his final game with the Raiders.
“I’m just focused on Denver,” Pierce said.
The Raiders have been calling other teams to gauge interest in trading for Adams, according to multiple sources. Sources have also confirmed that Adams has told the Raiders he would prefer to be traded.
Multiple reports speculate that the leading candidates to make a trade have a quarterback with whom Adams played previously, the Jets (Aaron Rodgers) and the Saints (Derek Carr).
Adams remains one of the NFL’s top receivers, even at nearly 32, because of his precise route running and ability to catch passes, even while double teamed. He caught 103 passes last season for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns. It was his fifth 1,000-yard season in six years, broken up only by the 997 yards Adams had in 2019. He has caught 18 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown in three games this season.
GIANTS: Rookie Malik Nabers, who leads the NFL in receptions after four games, missed practice on Wednesday because of a concussion he sustained late in the 20-15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday.
Coach Brian Daboll said the No. 6 overall pick in the draft was still in the early stages of the concussion protocol and his status for Sunday’s game in Seattle against the Seahawks (3-1) is uncertain. Against Dallas, Nabers had a career-best 12 catches for 115 yards before getting hurt .
BROWNS: Nick Chubb made a move Wednesday more significant than any cutback when the star running back returned to practice for the first time since suffering a grotesque, season-ending left knee injury more than a year ago.
The four-time Pro Bowler could still be a week or two away from playing in a game, but just having the 28-year-old on the field was a boost to the struggling Browns (1-3), who could use something positive.
Chubb is not likely to play Sunday at Washington, but he is expected to be active for a game this month. The Browns play at Philadelphia on Oct. 13 before hosting Cincinnati on Oct. 20 and Baltimore on Oct. 27.
VIKINGS: Minnesota plans to open tight end T.J. Hockenson’s practice window later this week, putting the two-time Pro Bowl pick another step closer to returning from the torn ACL and MCL in his right knee suffered near the end of last season.
Coach Kevin O’Connell said Wednesday that Hockenson, who started the season on the physically unable to perform list, would start practicing with the team Friday in London. Hockenson will then have 21 days to continue ramping up before the Vikings (4-0) must add him to the active roster.
JETS: Wide receiver Allen Lazard expects to be fined for his celebration after a catch against Denver last Sunday that included what officials deemed to be a gun-like gesture.
“It’s something that’s very silly,” he said Wednesday. “Very, very silly.”
The wide receiver said his coaches have talked to him about it, but added he has received “zero clarification from the NFL” on the 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for which he was called. Lazard caught a 12-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers in the third quarter when, while sitting on the turf, he signaled for a first down by flicking his hands in a gun-like motion.
“It’s very unfortunate that I’m the victim of this situation,” he said. “But it is what it is and it’s part of the NFL and it’s a part of the entertainment factor.”
DOLPHINS: Miami pass rusher Jaelan Phillips said the knee injury he suffered against the Tennessee Titans on Monday night will require season-ending surgery.
Phillips had worked his way back from a season-ending right Achilles tendon tear in 2023, in which he missed the final seven games of the season.
COWBOYS: Dallas receiver Brandin Cooks will miss Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh with a knee injury, the third starter set to be sidelined along with pass rushers Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.
The Dallas Morning News reported that Cooks developed an infection in his right knee after receiving an injection for knee discomfort.
