Even though it’s still early October, we’ll get an early taste of the fall sports postseason this weekend, as the golf state championships will be held.

For football, soccer, field hockey, volleyball and cross country, the regular season continues and the best is yet to come.

Here’s a look back at the week that was and a glimpse at what’s to come:

Golf

Scarborough’s golf team finished third at Monday’s state qualifier and will take part in the Class A match Friday at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro. The Red Storm finished with a score of 326, six strokes behind reigning state champion Falmouth and three behind runner-up Thornton Academy. Marc Twombly led the way with an 18-hole round of 78.

Scarborough finished the regular season with a record of 8-2 after a 10-3 loss to Falmouth and a 13-0 win over Portland last week. Against the Navigators, Twombly had a team-best nine-hole score of 40. In the victory, Twombly led the way with a 36.

Boys’ soccer

Scarborough’s boys’ soccer team was 7-1-1 and fourth in the Class A South Heal Points standings following last week’s 5-1 win at Bonny Eagle. Khalil Ghosheh had two goals and Finn Coburn, Joseph Donahue and Cooper Mallar also found the net.

The Red Storm hosted Massabesic Wednesday, has a showdown at reigning regional champion Deering Saturday, then goes to Noble Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, the two-time reigning champion Red Storm was 6-1-2 and fourth in Class A South following a 4-0 home win over Noble and a 2-1 setback at Falmouth. In the victory, Paige Garlock scored twice, Josie Duncan scored her first varsity goal and Hope Melevsky also finished. Scarborough’s 22-game unbeaten streak then came to a stunning end Tuesday at Falmouth, as the Navigators scored the winning goal with just a half-second left.

The Red Storm had little time to lick their wounds, as they hosted powerhouse Windham Thursday (see our website for game story). Scarborough visits Biddeford Monday and welcomes Thornton Academy Tuesday of next week.

Football

Scarborough’s football team fell to 1-4 with a 40-0 loss at Cony last weekend.

The Red Storm, who have lost four straight games and haven’t scored in the past three, host 3-2 Bonny Eagle Friday. Last year, Scarborough lost at the Scots, 36-0.

Field hockey

Scarborough’s field hockey team was 5-4 and fifth in Class A South after edging visiting South Portland/Westbrook (2-1) and Massabesic (3-2) and falling at home to reigning state champion Cheverus (3-0).

The Red Storm hosted Gorham Thursday, go to Falmouth Monday and play at Sanford Wednesday of next week.

Volleyball

Scarborough’s volleyball team fell to 5-6 and fourth in Class A following a four-set (25-20, 12-25, 20-25, 17-25) loss at Cheverus and a 3-0 home loss to Falmouth. In the first-ever loss to the Stags, Olivia Ingream finished with 10 kills and seven service points, Leo Porter had 15 service points, including four aces and Natalie Philibert had 10 assists,

The Red Storm hosted reigning champion Gorham in a state rematch Thursday, then go to Kennebunk Tuesday of next week.

Cross country

Scarborough’s cross country team took part in the Festival of Champions in Belfast last weekend.

The Red Storm boys were runners-up to Portland in a field which included 74 teams. Scarborough was paced individually by Atticus Merriam, who was sixth in 16 minutes, 6.79 seconds.

The Red Storm girls placed 15th (Mt. Desert Island came in first). Laurel Driscoll led the Red Storm with a 12th-place finish (19:09.08).
