I’m writing to express my support for the upcoming land bond, Question 3. This year, Scarborough voters will have a chance to support a new $6 million bond that we desperately need to help balance our town’s rapid growth with conservation of open space and natural places.

There are those who claim this land bond will cost us more in taxes; this is a misleading argument. Instead, consider the cost of town services which must be furnished to new developments. These services include building new roads, maintaining those roads, lighting, electricity, sewer lines and school services for children in the new neighborhoods, to name just a few. Your taxes will have to pay for those services.

Which would you rather live next to? Peaceful woods and fields, or a busy, harshly lit development?

I’m voting “yes” on Question 3.
