In addition to casting a vote for their preferred presidential candidate and weighing in on other state and federal contests, North Yarmouth residents also will vote on a proposed charter amendment on Nov. 5.
The proposed amendment directs the Select Board to elect a vice chair at the same time it elects the board’s chair.
At a Select Board meeting over the summer, Town Manager Diane Barnes called the change “minor” and said it was just a measure to bring the charter up to date with what the town is currently doing in practice. Current charter language doesn’t state that the town elects a vice chair when the municipal officers are elected, Barnes said.
The charter amendment also includes additional language noting that if the chair or vice chair “ceases to serve as a selectperson, resigns as chair or vice chair, or is otherwise unable to discharge his or her duties prior to the end of their term,” the Select Board must “as soon as practicable” elect a new chair or vice chair.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, and are located at Wescustogo Hall and Community Center, 120 Memorial Highway.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
