The Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram were recognized with 60 awards at the Maine Press Association’s annual awards ceremony Saturday night.

The Press Herald won second place for general excellence print in the daily news category and third place for general excellence digital. The newspaper’s Sunday edition, the Maine Sunday Telegram, won third place for general excellence print among weekend publications.

In all, the Portland papers won more than 50 individual awards, including 24 first place awards, for reporting and editing, photography, opinion writing and advertising. The awards were presented Saturday at the association’s awards ceremony in Bar Harbor.

The Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram are part of the Maine Trust for Local News, which also includes the Sun Journal in Lewiston, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, the Morning Sentinel in Waterville, the Times Record in Brunswick, and 17 weekly papers in southern and western Maine, including the Forecaster group. Those papers also took home honors at the ceremony.

The Sun Journal won general excellence print in the weekend category, followed by Central Maine Sunday, the weekend publication of the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal, which took second place for general excellence print.

The KJ was also recognized with third place in the daily category for general excellence print.

The Morning Sentinel won the top award for general excellence advertising, followed by the Maine Sunday Telegram in second and Central Maine Sunday in third.

The Press Herald won second place in the freedom of information award, followed by the KJ in third place. And Daryn Slover of the Sun Journal received the Best in Show photography award. The Sun Journal’s Mary Delamater was given the Unsung Hero award, recognizing a person whose contribution to their newspaper is essential but can often be overlooked.

The Bangor Daily News won general excellence print in the daily category. BDN investigative reporter Sawyer Loftus was named Journalist of the Year.
