We are on the cusp of playoff thrills in soccer, field hockey, volleyball and cross country, while football is nearing the end of its regular season as well.
The best part of the fall sports season has arrived and Scarborough teams will be in the middle of the excitement.
Here’s a glimpse at how it all shakes out:
Boys’ soccer
Scarborough’s boys’ soccer team finished the regular season 12-1-1 and on a seven-game win streak after a 6-1 victory at Cheverus and a 4-0 home win over Kennebunk. In the win over the Stags, Matt Booth, Connor Casey, Finn Coburn, Joe Donahue, Khalil Ghosheh and Cooper Mallar all had one goal. Mallar also had two assists, as did Santana Diaz. Against the Rams, Booth, Mallar, Denver Bachman and EJ Herrick each scored once.
The Red Storm project to be the No. 3 seed for the Class A South tournament and will welcome either No. 6 Deering (7-6-1) or No. 11 Marshwood (5-8-1) in the quarterfinals next Wednesday.
Girls’ soccer
Scarborough’s girls’ soccer team, the two-time reigning Class A champion, wound up second in Class A South at 11-1-2 following home victories over Bonny Eagle (2-0) and Thornton Academy (2-1) and Tuesday’s surprisingly decisive 4-0 win at Gorham. Delia Fravert had two both goals against the Scots, then scored twice more and assisted on Grace Carlista’s goal in the win over the Golden Trojans. Against the Rams, Carlista, Fravert, Emerson Flaker and Paige Garlock each scored once.
The Red Storm will host either No. 7 Marshwood (8-5-1) or No. 10 South Portland (4-7-3) in the quarterfinals Tuesday of next week.
Football
Scarborough’s football team snapped a five-game skid and improved to 2-5 last Friday with a 45-35 win last weekend at two-time reigning Class C champion Leavitt. After three straight shutout losses, followed by a 70-14 setback to Bonny Eagle, the Red Storm caught fire against the Hornets.
Quarterback Logan O’Keefe passed for 257 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Kevin Collins ran for 77 yards and two scores, caught three balls for 86 yards and a TD and on defense, forced two fumbles, recovering one. Logan Pearson finished with four catches for 108 yards a score and Kyle Gambardella had a 68-yard touchdown scamper. Owen Pepler was 6-of-6 on extra points and also kicked a 25-yard field goal.
“Especially with this being the second tough year in a row, it is hard to keep positive,” said Scarborough coach Packy Malia. “But we keep pointing out the good things and try hard not to let frustrations boil over. The big thing is you don’t want it to become a miserable grind. You want to make sure the kids are still having fun, that it doesn’t become a chore to show up every day. That was a good thing last week. We had a lot of enthusiasm and fun in practice, and that was encouraging, considering we’d just given up 70 points.”
The Red Storm (ranked sixth in the Class A South Crabtree Points standings) hosts 4-3 South Portland Friday night. Last year, Scarborough lost at home to the Red Riots, 7-0. The Red Storm wrap up the regular season Halloween Night at reigning Class A champion Thornton Academy.
Field hockey
Scarborough’s field hockey team finished the regular season 6-8 after a 2-1 (overtime) setback at Sanford, a 3-0 win at Marshwood and Monday’s 2-1 home loss to Thornton Academy. Sabrina Ocampo had the goal against the Spartans.
The Red Storm will be the No. 9 seed for the Class A South tournament and will be on the road, likely at Massabesic, for the preliminary round. The day and time has yet to be announced.
Volleyball
Scarborough’s volleyball team finished the regular season 6-8 after a 3-2 victory at Sanford.
The Red Storm will be the No. 6 seed for the Class A state tournament, which meant a home date with No. 11 South Portland (6-8) in the preliminary round Thursday. Scarborough downed the visiting Red Riots, 3-1, back on Sept. 12.
If victorious, the Red Storm go to No. 3 Gorham (10-4), the reigning state champion, in the quarterfinals. The Rams won both regular season meetings, 3-0 at home in the opener Sept. 5 and 3-2 at Scarborough Oct. 10.
The state semifinals are next Wednesday, on the floors of the higher seeds.
Cross country
Scarborough’s cross country teams will compete in the Class A South regionals this Saturday at Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland. The boys will be vying for the top spot with Portland.
The state meet is Saturday, Nov. 2 also in Cumberland.
