I believe that Donald Trump is unfit to lead our great nation again. Former top officials in his administration have said so publicly and in the starkest terms. He knows no restraint, and he has no moral center beyond his own self-interest. The trust his supporters place in him is unearned.
I appreciate learning about history; nonfiction is my go-to reading. I’ve read about the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1930s Germany, and I’ve often wondered why people there were so enthusiastic about his character and leadership. Hitler’s rallies were long in messaging and high in fanfare. He fired people up like no other.
We know today how this zeal for German greatness ended: chaos, Gestapo raids on fellow citizens, genocide and world war.
Did regular Germans foresee these ends? Some surely did. I have similar worries for our future from the statements and actions of Trump and his supporters.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
