Sophia St. John scored off a feed from Sadie Collins in the second quarter, and Lucy Johnson got the eventual winner in the third quarter as top-ranked Cheverus held off No. 8 Massabesic for a 2-1 win Tuesday afternoon in a Class A South field hockey quarterfinal in Portland.
It was the 33rd straight win for Cheverus (15-0), which advances to a Saturday semifinal against Thornton Academy.
Charlize Anderson scored in the third quarter for Massabesic (9-7).
THORNTON ACADEMY 2, SANFORD 1: Shyla McVeigh broke a tie with 5:56 left as the fifth-seeded Trojans (10-4-1) downed the fourth-seeded Spartans (8-5) in a Class A South quarterfinal in Sanford.
McVeigh one-timed a back pass from Cora Bolduc, who also set up the tying goal by Olivia Lamey in the third quarter.
Lamey scored on a backhander after a long diagonal pass by Bolduc, who dribbled past four defenders to set up the play.
Ellie Davis converted a breakaway in the second quarter for Sanford.
Thornton next faces defending state champion Cheverus in the semifinals.

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/NYA 1, GREELY 0: Emma Bowden scored after a scramble in the circle with 4:22 left, and the third-seeded Patriots (13-2) took down the sixth-seeded Rangers (6-8-1) in a Class B South quarterfinal in Gray.
Greta Tod assisted on the goal.
The Patriots advance to face No. 2 Yarmouth in the semifinals.
Greely goalie Mya Vickerson made five saves.
YARMOUTH 6, POLAND 1: Erica O’Connor scored three goals to lead the second-seeded Clippers (14-1) past the No. 7 Knights (3-11-1) in a Class B South quarterfinals at Yarmouth.
Maya Nasveschuk added two goals and Gianna LaBella also scored.
Abby Coughlin scored for Poland.
FREEPORT 10, LAKE REGION 0: Emily Groves recorded three goals for the top-seeded Falcons (15-0) as they beat the eighth-seeded Lakers (5-10) in a Class B South quarterfinal at Freeport.
Anna Maschino and Liza Flower each contributed two goals. Sophie Bradford, Lydia Porter and Callie Bourgoin also scored for the reigning state champions.
Nicole Watson made 13 saves for Lake Region.
SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 7, TRAIP ACADEMY 0: Alaina Kachnovich had two goals and an assist as the fourth-seeded Phoenix (9-6) advanced by defeating the No. 5 Rangers (6-7-1) in the Class C South quarterfinals in Jay.
Maddie Grimaldi also scored twice, and Linda Lake contributed a goal and two assists. Adell Pease and Aisla Armandi, were the other goal scorers, Miley Fournier had two assists, and Pease and Zoe Groomes each had one assist.
Madison Evans made 21 saves for Traip.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
GORHAM 3, THORNTON ACADEMY 2: Ashley Connolly converted a penalty kick with under five minutes remaining after a handball, lifting the third-seeded Rams (12-2-1) over the No. 6 Trojans (8-5-3) in a Class A South quarterfinal at Gorham.
Quincy Thibault scored both Thornton goals, including a tying tally in the second half. Julia Reed and Sarah Rosingana were the other goal scorers for Gorham, which advances to play Scarborough in the semifinals.
Rams keeper Lydia Spear was credited with two saves. Thornton’s Ava Lomax stopped six shots.
SCARBOROUGH 4, MARSHWOOD 1: Delia Fravert tallied two goals, Maggie Booth had two assists, and the second-seeded Red Storm (12-1-2) scored three unanswered goals in the second half to win a Class A South quarterfinal against the seventh-seeded Hawks (9-6-1) in Scarborough.
Marshwood’s Lucy Parker scored the opening goal with about 12 minutes left in the first half. Scarborough’s Emma Flaker bodied in a cross from Booth with 7:36 remaining.
In the second half, Fravert took a pass from Booth and scored with a hard strike from 25 yards, then finished off a well-timed through ball by Grace Carlista.
Paige Garlock got the final goal.
WINDHAM 8, KENNEBUNK 0: Emily Talbot paced the top-seeded Eagles (13-1-1) with three goals as they cruised past the eighth-seeded Rams (7-4-4) in a Class A South quarterfinal at Windham.
Juliana Gagne scored twice, and Mackenzie Delewski, Marley Jarvais and Kyla Harvie each added a goal. Elizabeth Hartwell stopped three shots for the shutout as Windham advanced to a semifinal against Cheverus.
Teagan Hanson and Kate Orendorf split time in net for Kennebunk, combining for 14 saves.
CAPE ELIZABETH 4, FRYEBURG ACADEMY 0: Addie Miller scored in the sixth minute to start the second-seeded Capers (11-1-3) as on their way to a Class B South quarterfinal win over the seventh-seeded Raiders (7-8) in Cape Elizabeth.
Hailey Gorman, Noelle Mallory and CC Duryee also scored.
GREELY 5, WELLS 0: Avery Bush produced two goals, and Abby Lennox had a goal and two assists for the top-seeded Rangers (11-0-4) against the eighth-seeded Warriors (7-8) in a Class B South quarterfinal at Cumberland.
Jackie Franklin and Sami Santerre also scored.
FREEPORT 4, LINCOLN ACADEMY 0: Lucy Riggs led the third-seeded Falcons (10-3-2) with two goals as they topped the sixth-seeded Eagles (5-6-3) in a Class B South quarterfinal at Freeport.
Freeport also received goals from Lana DiRusso and Isla Pattershall.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH 4, CARRABEC/VALLEY 2: Corinne Androkitis scored twice to lead the fifth-seeded Seagulls (6-9) over the fourth-seeded Cobras (2-13) in a Class D South quarterfinal at North Anson.
Lea Alivizatos and Emma Ellison each chipped in with a goal for OOB.
Leah Price and Laci Madore were the goal scorers for Carrabec/Valley.
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 2, WAYNFLETE 1: Delia Fontana scored with an assist from Delphine Daniel and then set up a goal from Natasha Godfrey as the third-seeded Panthers (12-3) defeated the sixth-seeded Flyers (5-9-1) in a Class C South quarterfinal at Yarmouth.
Fallon Culley converted a penalty kick in the second half for Waynflete.
Sadie Morgan recorded three saves for NYA. Waynflete’s Rachel Yordon stopped five shots.
