The Maine Legislature adjourned several weeks ago. Since then, we taxpayers received our coming year’s property tax bills. The Legislature didn’t adequately address the property tax issues as it should have. Additionally, the property tax stabilization program for all Mainers 65 and over was discontinued, resulting in higher property tax bills. Why did the Democrats do so? Not acceptable.
Many people got a significant increase in their property taxes, now that the property tax freeze was lifted. Some experienced over a $1,000 increase. That’s substantive, especially for those who are retiring, retired, and are on a fixed income. Democratic control in the Legislature should’ve figured out that in an inflationary period, property taxes would rise significantly due to rising home valuations. They totally blew it.
Mainers need to vote wisely for more responsible state legislators who will work for Mainers. Let’s vote discerningly this November. Vote responsibly.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
