BIDDEFORD — A couple hours before her team’s Class A South field hockey semifinal, Biddeford senior Ayla Lagasse was named one of the two finalists for Miss Maine Field Hockey.
Lagasse showed Saturday at Waterhouse Field that the selection committee made a good choice.
Lagasse scored one goal and set up another, leading second-seeded Biddeford to a 2-0 win over No. 3 Gorham.
“It’s very awesome. I’m very thankful,” Lagasse said of being named a finalist for the award, given to Maine’s top senior field hockey player. “We’ve got to play our game. Use our passing. When we play how we play, it’s always a good game.”
Biddeford (14-2) play for the regional title Wednesday at Falmouth High against defending state champion Cheverus (16-0), which is led by the other Miss Maine Field Hocky finalist – Lucy Johnson.
Saturday’s win was Biddeford’s third this season over Gorham (11-5).
“That’s the least amount they’ve scored on us all season. This is the fourth year in a row we’ve faced them in the playoffs, either in the semifinals or the quarterfinals. We’re just battling with them all the time,” Gorham Coach Becky Manson said. “They’ve got a lot of speed. Their passing is amazing. They were able to capitalize on the opportunities and we missed a few.”
Cheverus beat Biddeford twice in the regular season, both by scores of 2-0.
“Third time’s the charm?” said Biddeford Coach Caitlin Tremberth. “I feel like it’s going to be a good game. It has been the last two games.”
The Tigers took the lead early in the second quarter, with Lagasse scoring on a penalty corner. Hannah Sonne-Loranger put the ball in play with a pass to Eliza Doyon, who passed to Lagasse for a shot from the right side of the circle into the left corner of the cage.
“It was supposed to be something else, but they were covered, so I just had to improvise. I just shot it. I was in the circle, and nobody tipped it,” Lagasse said.
Lagasse’s goal came on Biddeford’s third penalty corner in less than two minutes.
“I feel like we are such a fast team, and we’re hopeful to get those penalty corners because they really are momentum boosters. We just have a bunch of girls that can put it in the net,” Tremberth said. “This is the highest scoring season that we’ve ever had in the program. I just give a lot of credit to their tenacity and their ability to draw those corners.”
The Tigers took a two-goal lead with 11:31 to play in the third quarter when freshman Mia Mariello stuffed home a Lagasse pass.
Biddeford’s quick defense enabled it to transition to offense quickly, and prevented the Rams from maintaining sustained offensive pressure.
“Kudos to them, but we needed to be cutting more and using our vision more. They made a really good stops on our hits,” Manson said. “They did a great job keeping us out of their defensive end for quite some time. We’d get a bit of a go, then we’d lose it.”
Tigers goalie Mariah Villandry made one save. Gorham’s Madison Tibbals stopped six shots.
