WINDHAM — The top-seeded Windham girls’ soccer team has won games quickly and emphatically so far in the Class A South playoffs.
Three days after blanking Kennebunk, 8-0, in the quarterfinals, the Eagles hosted No. 4 Cheverus on Saturday morning and seized control quickly.
Emily Talbot scored on a penalty kick, then set up Mackenzie Delewski for another goal less than a minute later in the opening 10 minutes, propelling the Eagles to a 3-0 win.
Talbot added a second successful penalty kick in the second half.
The Eagles (14-1-1) will battle two-time reigning state champion Scarborough in the regional final at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Massabesic High in Waterboro.
“We wanted to come out, set the tone, play hard and get on the board first,” said Deb Lebel, Windham’s longtime coach. “These seniors are fired up. They’re going as hard as they can.”
In the ninth minute, after a foul in the box, Talbot put the Eagles in front with her first penalty kick, beating Cheverus goalkeeper Evelyn Rush (eight saves) with a low blast just inside the right post.
“I was definitely nervous, but it’s about composure,” Talbot said. “You can’t let the nerves get to you. PKs are a mental game. It’s a simple shot. I was really just focusing on placing the ball in the corner of the net.
“That gave us motivation. We’re the type of team that needs one (goal) to keep us going, then we got one right after.”
The second goal came a mere 33 seconds later. Talbot crossed the ball from the right side to the far post, where Delewski ran on to it and pounded it into the net.
The Stags (11-3-2) didn’t manage a shot in the first half but amped up the pressure in the second half, forcing Eagles goalkeeper Libby Hartwell to make four saves.
Then, with 11:03 to play, Windham was awarded another penalty kick and Talbot converted with a shot nearly identical to her first goal.
“Emily’s determined,” Lebel said. “That’s one thing I can say about her. She was terrific today.”
Scarborough is the lone team to beat Windham this season, but the Eagles are eager to see the Red Storm again with a trip to the state championship game on the line.
“I’m really excited,” Talbot said. “We’ll work hard in practice. There are things we can still improve on and I think we have a good chance.”
Cheverus fell in the semifinals for the third year in a row and now has to part with offensive standouts Finley Brown, Jill Foley, Sophia Monfa and Annie Vigue, as well as Rush.
“Getting down two early, we could have easily collapsed, but we showed resilience, and for that I’m so proud of the girls,” said Stags Coach Craig Roberts. “Our captains, Finley, Annie, Evelyn, Jill and ‘Monf,’ are the best players on our team and are the best leaders, too. Girls gravitate to them. I’ve enjoyed coaching them. I’ve watched them grow so much.”
