Forecaster Country cross country runners stole headlines one final time last Saturday in the state meet at Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland.
There were champions crowned and some near misses as well, but all in all, it was a day to remember.
Here’s how it played out:
Class A
Falmouth’s girls finished with 61 points, which was 19 clear of runner-up Portland. The Navigators won their first title in Class A and their first in any class since taking Class C way back in 2000.
Falmouth was paced by three top 10 finishers: Georgia Moon (fourth, 19 minutes, 21.05 seconds), Parker Fox (seventh, 19:49.26) and Maeve Ginevan (10th, 20:07.44). Also scoring were Elle Foley (11th, 20:30.56) and Haley Barrett (29th, 21:35.95).
“It’s been a really cohesive group,” said Jorma Kurry, Falmouth’s co-coach with Danny Paul. “They work together. They run together. The seniors took charge. They set it up with summer training and the sophomores came on great.”
The Navigators will run together one more time, Saturday at the New England championship meet in Manchester, Connecticut.
In the Class A boys’ race, won by Scarborough with 69 points, one better than runner-up Portland, Falmouth had 235 points and placed ninth, its best finish in five years.
The Navigators were led by Frederick Brill (25th, 17:41.64). Also scoring were Sean Lowery (34th, 18:06.9), Christopher Jaynes (47th, 18:18.33), Olin Johnson (64th, 18:48.25) and Eli Sidhu (65th, 18:49.38).
Class B
In Class B, Freeport’s boys won their fourth consecutive championship and seventh all-time, finishing with 69 points, 23 better than runner-up Caribou. The Falcons featured the second- and third-place individuals in Alex Gilbert (16:28.2) and Conner Smith (16:36.15). Owen Dawson (10th, 17:28.94), Mungu Tussing (23rd, 18:06.08) and Ian Guzman (31st, 18:26.48) also scored.
Freeport will compete at New Englands as a team.
Greely (115 points) placed fourth, its 10th consecutive top-five finish. The Rangers were led by William Coull (fifth, 16:50.15) and Tait Harvey (seventh, 16:58.18), who both qualified for New Englands as individuals. Also scoring were Owen Cooper (16th, 17:55.0), Zachary Doane (38th, 18:40.51) and Luca Cianchette (49th, 18:57.26).
Yarmouth (124) was fifth, its best showing since 2017. The Clippers were paced by Cameron Pernal (12th, 17:38.31). Also scoring were Jackie Chalmers (15th, 17:49.83), Jeffrey Owen (22nd, 18:05.13), Jesse Canfield (32nd, 18:27.21) and Alyosha Sulyandziga (43rd, 18:51.13).
In the girls’ competition, won by Mt. Desert Island with 41 points, Freeport (53) came in second, its best performance since 2013. The Falcons had three runners in the top 10: Lucy Huggett (third, 19:14.53), Lilah Hall (seventh, 20:12.78) and Ella Oshetski (10th, 20:28.75). Also scoring were Josie Spaulding (12th, 20:30.91) and Esther Penney (21st, 21:34.97).
Freeport qualified for New Englands as a team.
Yarmouth (164) was fifth, its best finish since 2018. Leading the way for the Clippers was Olivia Wentworth (fifth, 19:40.94), who qualified for New Englands as an individual. Also scoring were Madeleine Jones (14th, 20:52.84), Abbie Grunewald (43rd, 23:10.59), Maya Faulstich (49th, 23:20.61) and Sisi Hunt (53rd, 23:43.74).
Greely (178) placed sixth and was paced by Rowan Barry, who came in fourth (19:20.54) and qualified for New Englands as an individual. Also scoring were Sarah Weisz (17th, 21:17.24), Emma Stein (22nd, 21:42.58), Gina Lestage (58th, 23:58.16) and Riley Record (77th, 27:38.39).
Class C
In Class C, Maine Coast Waldorf’s girls had 123 points and finished fourth (Waynflete won the title with 57). MCW featured Soren Stark-Chessa, who was third (19:08.82) and qualified for New Englands as an individual. Also scoring were Rahel Delaney (10th, 21:34.16), Kayla McGuire (33rd, 24:41.75), Murreal Wilmot (34th, 24:43.76) and Tashi Durham (43rd, 26:16.52).
North Yarmouth Academy didn’t qualify as a team, but Hadley Smith and Acadia Guliani competed as individuals. Smith had the 14th-fastest time (21:39.4) and Guliani posted the 26th-best (23:00.03).
In the boys’ meet, won by Orono with 32 points, NYA took part as a team at states for the first time since 2019 and finished 12th with 248 points. Leading the way was Mael Saint-Hilaire (17th, 18:32.35). Also scoring were Leif MacCarthy (28th, 19:12.01), Haddon Doyle (56th, 20:27.15), James Vaillancourt (70th, 21:09.57) and Alex Rogow (77th, 21:26.64).
MCW didn’t qualify as a team, but Leighton Doyle had the 37th-best individual time (19:14.64).
