WATERBORO — With the game over, the cast came off Josie Duncan’s right arm. Her arm has been healed for a few weeks, but the freshman back from Scarborough has continue to wear a cast during games in case of contact.
“Everyone tells me it’s good luck now,” Duncan said.
With her superbly accurate right foot, Duncan makes her own luck. She scored twice on deep free kicks Tuesday night in the Class A South girls’ soccer final, pacing the Red Storm to a 3-1 win over Windham at Massabesic High.
“It’s really nice to have that weapon, where she can hit a free kick from anywhere inside 40 yards and put it right underneath the bar. She’s done that a few times,” Scarborough Coach Mike Farley said. “It’s a nice thing to have a freshman come in and not be scared and play at that high level.”
Second-seeded Scarborough (14-1-2) will play for a third straight Class A state championship Saturday at McMann Field in Bath. The Red Storm will face Bangor in a rematch of last year’s title game.
Windham, the No. 1 seed in the South, ends the season at 14-2-1, with both losses to Scarborough.
“Getting to the state final once is hard. Getting there three years in a row is definitely hard. You’ve got to beat some excellent teams, like Windham, like Gorham,” Farley said.
The Red Storm took the lead just 47 seconds into the game when Grace Carlista scored on a long shot from the left. Carlista’s shot ricocheted off the right post and into the net.
Duncan’s first goal came with 23:30 left in the first half – a 45-yard shot off the underside of the crossbar on a free kick following a Windham handball.
“We knew we couldn’t foul, because their direct kick is a goal. She’s going to put it right on,” Windham Coach Deb Lebel said. “I was really proud of how our kids responded. They didn’t get down on themselves. They kept playing. They kept playing right to the very end.”
Windham got a goal back when Emily Talbot scored with 10:35 left in the first half. Talbot had two strong scoring chances in the second half, but each time, Scarborough keeper Sophia Rinaldi made the save to preserve the lead.
With 8:04 left, Duncan scored on another direct kick, this one from 35 yards with a shot just under the crossbar.
“We definitely work a lot on it at practice. They kind of just give me freedom. Once they found out I can take the kicks, I aim and I go,” Duncan said.
Duncan’s aptitude for free kicks has been a key weapon for the Red Storm all season, Farley said.
“If we can score from a set play, it really changes the game, because we’re pretty dangerous in the run of play. So you get those moments where you get set plays and you have somebody that can hit a driven ball from such a distance,” Farley said. “Not only is she doing that. She’s clearing balls 60 yards and getting the attack started. It’s a huge weapon, and we built our offense around her, basically.”
The key to beating Windham twice this season was twofold, Farley said. First, his team had to occupy space deep in the Eagles’ end to prevent Windham from clearing the ball deep and transition to offense. Two, an emphasis was placed on defending goal kicks.
“When I watch other teams play against them, everyone’s free, and they’re big, strong, physical kids who win the ball,” Farley said. “They wear you down by getting the ball down in your end the whole time, and we did a really good job, especially in the first half, of not letting that happen.”
