No. 3 Deering was dominant in its first home playoff game in nine years, shutting out No. 3 Massabesic, 21-0, in a Class B South semifinal Friday night at Memorial Field.
Dash Newhall and Joey Foley ran for touchdowns and quarterback Tavian Lauture kicked a pair of field goals and scored on a 2-point conversion rush for Deering. The Rams improved to 8-1 and advanced to take on top-seeded Kennebunk in the regional final next weekend.
Deering last played in a regional final in 2010, when it lost to Cheverus in Western Class A.
“Deering is playing in a regional championship game and that’s pretty cool,” said Brendan Scully, the Rams’ second-year head coach. “It’s great and everything for me, but there’s some really talented kids here and I just got them pointed in the right direction.”
Deering set the tone by driving 74 yards in a dozen plays, taking almost seven minutes off the clock. Lauture and Foley took turns gaining yardage to get the Rams close, and Newhall capped the march with a 7-yard run.
“That first touchdown felt good, for sure,” said Lauture. “We knew we could go right down the field and we were going to continue to do it the rest of the game.”
Massabesic (7-3), which managed just 46 first-half yards compared to 171 for Deering, make a key mistake in the second quarter, fumbling a punt. The Rams couldn’t turn the gift into a touchdown, but Lauture booted a 23-yard field goal to give the Rams a 10-0 advantage.
Lauture kicked a 35-yard field goal late in the half to make it 13-0.
“I love the field goals,” said Lauture, who also attempted a 40-yard field goal that clanked off the left upright. “If something’s not going right and we can still get it in field-goal range, it can still work out for us.”
Deering put it away in the fourth quarter after an interception from Corbin Burke, when Foley scored on a 1-yard run and Lauture ran in the 2-point conversion.
“That interception felt great,” said junior linebacker Santino Cavallaro. “I was right there and I knew Corbin was getting it, for sure. That brought us life and we knew we had the game won at that moment.”
The Rams’ lone loss this year was at Kennebunk, 41-0, but Deering is excited for the rematch.
“We’ll just go in and execute and play better than we did last time,” Cavallaro said.
Deering held Massabesic to 103 yards.
“(Deering) played really well and jumped on our mistakes,” said Massabesic Coach Lucas Labbe. “They’re a well-coached team and they have good athletes. If you make mistakes, you put yourself in a hole you have to dig out of.
“The reality is there’s just one team that gets to the end of the rainbow. Unfortunately, losing is part of the game. The kids put so much into it. We had a good year and we’ve got some good things going. Our future is bright.”
