Portland firefighters extinguished a brush fire near Commercial Street on Saturday morning during a “very high” fire weather warning.
The Portland Fire Department responded to Danforth Street in the city’s West End around 10:30 a.m. and found a fire burning in the woods near West Commercial Street, Division Chief Sean Donaghue said. The fire was about half an acre in size and was burning near a shed.
Firefighters were stationed along Danforth Street in case the fire spread to homes there – a possibility due to gusty winds Saturday, Donaghue said. Meanwhile, another unit along West Commercial Street extinguished the fire.
No injuries were reported, Donaghue said, and no buildings were damaged.
Much of southern Maine, including the Portland area, had a “very high” chance of wildfire weather Saturday, according to the Forest Service Wildfire Danger Report.
Dry weather has meant more wildfires late into New England’s typical fire season, Forest Service officials said.
The entire state is experiencing abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. In the Portland area, rainfall in September and October was 5.41 inches below normal, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported last week.
West Commercial Street was briefly closed as crews worked to put out the fire, Donaghue said. It reopened later Saturday morning.
