Continuity is not something that often goes hand in hand with the NBA G League. Players come and go with an alarming frequency, either chasing the ultimate goal of reaching the NBA or to pursue other opportunities overseas.

For the Maine Celtics, that is certainly the case. Only four players are returning from last year’s squad that reached the NBA G League Finals, and that’s more than most years. But for a third consecutive season, one player has remained a constant – JD Davison.

He just turned 22 years old but is entering his third season with Maine. And Davison is poised to become the greatest player in franchise history by the end of the 2024-25 season.

A second-round selection by Boston in the 2022 NBA Draft, Davison is entering his third year on a Two-Way contract – the point guard can move back and forth between Boston and Maine, playing a maximum of 50 games in the NBA and the remainder of the season in the G League.

When the Celtics take the court on Friday, Nov. 15 for their home opener, Davison will start the game just five points shy of tying the franchise all-time scoring record. His 1,586 career points are second only to Chris Wright, who amassed 1,591 points over three seasons more than a decade ago.

Last season, Davison improved upon his offensive totals from his rookie campaign, averaging 21.5 points per game. His court awareness and passing ability has been his bread and butter. Davison became the franchise leader in assists halfway through last season, after about just 60 games played. He recorded over 10 assists in 18 of his 44 games in 2024-25.

In just two road games to start 2024-25, Davison has looked even better. He put in 31 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists in the Nov. 8 season opener at Long Island, and followed that up with 30 points and 14 assists in a blowout win at Delaware on Nov. 11.

Now, Davison and the Maine Celtics are headed home, poised to return to the raucous Portland Expo and ready to celebrate on Nov. 15. Five points to tie the scoring record, six points to break it. Davison has his eyes on the prize, and the Expo should be a party atmosphere this weekend.

The Maine Celtics follow up their home opener with Championship Day on Nov. 17. The Boston Celtics’ 2024 NBA Championship trophy will be in the house for fans to take pictures with as Maine battles the Westchester Knicks. The opening weekend kicks off an exciting slate of home games for the Maine Celtics, with seven home games before Christmas.

After the New Year (and the annual New Year’s Eve matinee game), Maine will turn back the clocks, donning the old red uniforms and rebranding to the Maine Red Claws for one game only on Jan. 5. That game will also feature a pre-game yard sale of all old Red Claws merchandise, and include a halftime performance by the original Red Claws halftime act, Red Panda.

It will be an unforgettable and record-setting season at the Expo. Be sure to secure your tickets and be a part of the excitement today.
