Freeport senior Mia Levesque committed Friday to attending and playing lacrosse next year at the University of New Hampshire.
Levesque, who helped the Falcons win their first state title in 2023, then led them back to the state game last spring, has overcome her share of adversity, including injury, in high school, and is eager for her next chapter.
“I’m so blessed for this opportunity,” said Levesque, who has also played basketball and soccer in high school. “I’ve put in a lot of work and it’s nice to show that it pays off. I knew I wanted to play a collegiate sport. I’ve worked on my skills and just got better. I wanted to get out of Maine, but I also wanted to be close enough to be home where my parents could come to my games and I could still see my friends. UNH is a gorgeous campus. They have a bunch of things I’m interesting in studying and I wanted to be at a big school.”
“It’s exciting and I’m very proud,” said Freeport girls’ lacrosse coach Marcia Wood. “(Mia’s) my first D1 athlete. I’m pumped it’s close and I can go see her. Seeing Mia and knowing she can do this, the kids around the school can see that Freeport can produce D1 athletes. Mia’s worked so hard. If she doesn’t feel she played well in a game, she’s out playing wall-ball. She doesn’t take it for granted. She’s level-headed.”
