“Beyond the Surface” opens in the River Room at River Arts in Damariscotta on Thursday. The show was created by four artists in four different mediums: fiber, acrylic painting, photography and mixed medium. The exhibition runs through Feb. 5.

A public reception will be from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, in conjunction with the gallery’s Members’ Show reception.

In the art show, Holly Anderson Baumm presents a fabric installation.

“When I started to create this artwork, ‘A Tribute to My Cousins,’ it was first like watching a film and then allowing my imagination to join in,” Baumm said in a prepared release. “I worked in mixed media to capture the essence and philosophical point of view on the subject and then created a visual artwork. I look forward to sharing this work in the River Room.”

Alice de Mauriac presents a large, action filled and texture rich painting, “Foreign Passages.”

“Lately, I have been considering the condition of uncertainty,” she said. “How much emotional content and unruliness can be packed into a painting without completely losing balance? Shedding the urge for resolution, I have explored a fluid, layered space creating a wide range of experience. Fraught with loss, the painting holds its ground. All of life is uncertain and yet we carry on.”

Photographer Jan Corneal displays her work featuring hulls of antique boats at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath.

“I was struck by their quiet wabi-sabi-ness … sea-weathered, faded, well past their prime … but then imagined them joyful and radiant in past voyages,” she said. “I gave them names and let them sing their stories: Ahab, Ishmael, Queequeg and The White Whale.”

Heather Greene shares a mixed media exhibit featuring altered books inviting dialogue on censorship, creativity and the power of the written word in challenging societal norms.
