“What can we do?” I hear this question more and more, as Donald Trump and Elon Musk run roughshod over our data privacy, health and safety, workers’ legal protections and constitutional checks and balances.
Trump wants to “flood the zone” with these attacks on our democracy, and the majority Republicans in Congress have capitulated to him. The courts are one of the few sea walls against this flood. There are more than 50 legal cases challenging the Trump-Musk administration.
If people want to do something, I suggest they contribute financially to one of the organizations active in these cases. They can give to broad-based organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (www.aclu.org) (privacy, liberty, and civil rights; LGBTQ rights; racial justice) or Democracy Forward (democracyforward.org) (public interest, immigrants’ rights, environmental justice, freedom of religion). Or they can pick a focused organization like the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ilapmaine.org) (immigrants’ legal rights in Maine) or Our Children’s Trust (www.ourchildrenstrust.org) (young people and environment). They can check out the mission and performance of many charities on Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org).
Donating to organizations like these can help us move from words to action.

We believe it’s important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
