Police are investigating a shooting that happened outside a Lewiston mosque Friday night.

A 19-year-old man was injured in the shooting and took himself to the hospital. His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening, said Lewiston Police public information officer Lt. Derrick St. Laurent.

Police were called to the parking lot of the Masjidu Salaam mosque on Bartlett Street about 9:45 p.m. Friday. There was a Ramadan service being held, and everyone inside the mosque fled before police arrived, St. Laurent said.

St. Laurent said the department believes there were several shooters, but no one was in custody as of Saturday afternoon. The department is currently going through surveillance footage, he said.

St. Laurent asked anyone who witnessed the shooting to contact the Lewiston Police Department at 207-513-3001.

“There was quite a few people in the mosque; it is Ramadan right now,” St. Laurent said. “They were having a service. We believe there were a lot of people that witnessed this.”

The name of the victim was not immediately released. St. Laurent said the department will be posting updates on its Facebook page.
