FORT MYERS, Fla. — Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello won’t be ready for the start of the season, manager Alex Cora told reporters Tuesday.
Bello, the Opening Day starter last season, has been dealing with soreness in his shoulder this spring. The Red Sox have been taking a cautious approach with him.
The 25-year-old was 14-8 last season with a 4.49 ERA. He had 153 strikeouts over 162 1/3 innings. The pitcher from the Dominican Republic agreed to a $55 million, six-year contract last March after originally signing with the Red Sox in 2017 for $28,000.
This will be his fourth season in the majors with Boston.
“He’s behind. So he’s not going to be with us for the Opening Day,” Cora said, according to MLB.com. “Just doesn’t make sense to push him and rush everything and then something major happens.”
Bello is slated to throw a bullpen session Wednesday.
In addition, the first appearance this spring of infielder Rafael Devers has been rescheduled to Saturday, according to MLB.com. The team is anticipating Devers being ready for the start of the season.
THE RED SOX optioned hard-throwing prospect Hunter Dobbins to minor league camp.
Dobbins, a member of the 40-man roster, is expected to begin the 2025 season in Triple-A Worcester‘s starting rotation. He’s the eighth cut from the Red Sox big league spring training roster.
Boston has 55 players remaining in camp. On Friday, they optioned pitcher Luis Perales and outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia — who also are both on the 40-man roster — to minor league camp. Boston also has reassigned pitchers Jovani Morán, Robert Stock, Brian Van Belle, Jacob Webb and Yovanny Cruz to minor league camp.
This was Dobbins’ first big league camp. The 25-year-old righty — who was up to 98-99 mph with his fastball last year — made two starts in Grapefruit League action. He allowed two runs, three hits and one walk while striking out three in 4 innings.
Dobbins posted a 8-5 with a 3.08 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, .237 batting average against, 120 strikeouts and 48 walks in 25 starts (125 2/3 innings) between Double-A Portland and Worcester last year. He found a new splitter grip last year and the pitch plays like a splinker, a hybrid between a splitter and sinker. He also shortened up his slider and it now plays more like a bullet slider.
LUCAS GIOLITO made his first start of the spring, allowing two run on two hits and two walks in the Red Sox’s 18-8 loss to the Philles in Fort Myers, Florida.
Giolito, who is working his way back from internal brace surgery on his right elbow, walked two and gave up a double against the first three batters. He then gave up sacrifice flies to Alec Bohm and Buddy Kenedy before ending his outing with a strikeout.
Adam Ottavino, who is in camp on minor league deal, pitched after Giolito and only recorded one out. He allowed six runs on three hits and three walks.
