I own Ginger Hill Design + Build, a small construction company in Arundel, and as both an employer and a self-employed individual, I strongly support Maine’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program.

While my company has fewer than 15 employees and isn’t required to contribute, we’ve chosen to cover our employees’ premiums because it’s an affordable way to provide a crucial benefit. At just $4.26 per week per employee — about the cost of a Netflix subscription — PFML is far less expensive than the alternative. Last year, when an employee needed time off to care for a dying parent, we covered their salary, which cost us thousands. PFML will allow businesses like mine to share that financial burden while still supporting employees during tough times.

On a personal level, I know how important this program is. When my second child was born, I had no choice but to return to work immediately. When my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I took unpaid leave, adding stress to an already difficult time. PFML would have made a huge difference for my family.

This program helps small businesses like mine compete with larger companies, while ensuring all workers have access to the time they need to care for themselves and their families. At just $220 per year per person, the cost is small, but the benefits are life-changing.
