We are a nation of people with mixed backgrounds, faiths and beliefs. In a recent letter here (“We’re vacationing in South Carolina instead of Maine,” March 6), a traveler to Maine expressed disgust with our governor and thus decided to cancel their summer vacation here.
Similarly, my wife and I, Mainers born and bred, plan to vacation this year in an area where we know there are many folks with opposing views. We will go anyway, because we realize that most folks are just like us — caring individuals who love their country. People from away are unique individuals with different experiences and different opinions. We will relish those differences and try to learn new things as we go. We sure hope those visiting here will do the same.
Learning does need to be built on truth, and our unhappy southern visitor seemed to miss some truths. Our governor has multiple degrees and job experience, a lifetime of public service and proficiency in foreign languages, though our unhappy visitor suggested she was “not very bright.”
Additionally, it was suggested that our governor is making an issue of transgender athletes. In fact, it is a Republican state lawmaker and our president who are creating this issue. Gov. Mills was simply defending us when attacked.
Some may opt to avoid a vacation in Maine, but people are different no matter where we travel. Think of it as an opportunity to grow and learn from the interaction. Either way, for the best traveling experiences, keep an open mind and always be kind to others.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
