Marvin is mild-mannered, until he steps into the starting block. Then, he morphs into a fierce competitor who is one of the finest swimmers in the state and this season, Marvin produced some memorable results.
Marvin joined the Deering/Portland co-op team as a freshman and finished third in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 free at the Class A state meet. As a sophomore, Marvin moved up to runner-up in the 100 free and placed fourth in the 50 free.
This year, Marvin was even better, dominating throughout the regular season in the freestyle, while also impressing in the backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley, before turning heads at the big postseason meets.
At the North Division Southwesterns, Marvin won the 100 free in 48.65 seconds and was runner-up to Greely’s Reid Petrie in the 200 free (1 minutes, 48.23 seconds).
Then, at the Class A state championship meet, where Deering/Portland came in ninth, Marvin won the title in the 100 free (48.63) and was second to Falmouth’s Carter VerLee in the 200 free (1:48.65). He also swam the lead leg on a fourth-place 200 free relay team and was part of a fifth-place 400 relay squad.
Marvin is also an all-star caliber level lacrosse player and he figures to have a huge senior season in store in the pool.
That’s because Andy Marvin, Portland’s Winter Athlete of the Year, has gotten better each year and his best is still to come.
Coach Sarah Rasmussen’s comment: “Andy is the kind of athlete every coach dreams of having. He has an incredible work ethic and every day in practice, he applies himself to doing his best. That effort is inspirational to his teammates and raises the level of practice for everyone on the team. Andy is the most fierce competitor we have. He can go from being a kind and gentle leader to a determined racer who does everything in his power to win, on every swim. Andy is one of the best swimmers in the state and is able to simultaneously be a humble leader on our team who raises the level of all of his teammates, competitors and coaches.”

* All-State
* Captain

Flynn had another spectacular season, one which saw her named one of the state’s elite players, and in the process, she led the Portland/South Portland/Deering/Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete Beacons co-op team to the regional final.
Flynn also won this award as a sophomore, a season which saw her score 37 goals (which was seven more than she tallied as a freshman). As a junior, Flynn made the All-State squad after scoring 12 goals and adding 31 assists as a top defender.
This season, Flynn dazzled again, scoring 18 goals and adding 25 assists, as she capped her high school career with 166 total points.
Flynn’s senior season highlights included two goals in a win over Greely, two assists in a victory over St. Dom’s, an assist as the Beacons handed reigning/eventual champion Cheverus its lone loss, a goal and three assists in a come-from-behind victory over Gorham, a goal and a pair of assists in a win over York and five goals, including the tying tally late in regulation and the winner in overtime, in a wild victory over Penobscot.
Flynn’s brilliance carried over to the playoffs, as she led the Beacons to a quarterfinal round win over Greely with three goals and one assist, then she assisted on the lone goal in the Beacons’ regional final loss to Cheverus.
And oh by the way, in addition to all the goals she was involved in, as a defender, she played a major role in shutting down the opposition’s best players too.
All of that was taken into account when Flynn was named a finalist for the Becky Schaffer Award, given to the state’s top senior (it was won by her Beacons teammate, South Portland’s Marina Bassett).
Flynn, who also made some big saves last fall for Portland’s girls soccer team, has won some big games at the club hockey level as well.
Jane Flynn, Portland’s Winter Athlete of the Year, had a superb high school career, capped by a special senior season. She was one of the finest two-way players we’ve seen.
Coach Bob Mills’ comment: “Jane meant so much to the Beacons program. Her innate skill and competitive drive were matched with a tireless work ethic, making her one of the best players in the state this year. One of Jane’s biggest strengths was her ability to safely move the puck out of our D zone. An adept stickhandler with great vision, Jane relied on her outstanding skating abilities to transition the puck out of harm’s way and routinely helped create offensive opportunities. Jane logged more minutes on the ice than any other skater for us this season and played in all situations, with only six total penalty minutes. When we needed a big goal, or needed to keep the puck away from our goal, Jane was always on the ice.”
