I consider myself a middle-of-the-road independent. I believe in democracy and recognize that President Trump won the election and deserves the chance to advance his agenda. But that does not give him the right to violate our Constitution and ignore laws passed by Congress.
I object to his closing USAID and ending foreign aid, a program that not only helps those in need but enhances our standing in the world. I am appalled with the actions of DOGE and Elon Musk. Reducing our federal budget and workforce may be desirable but not the slash and burn techniques of this megalomaniac.
I disagree with Trump’s attempt to bully our governor and withhold federal education funds, thus harming all of Maine’s children because our state does not agree with his views on diversity and inclusion. I was dismayed when he pardoned the Jan. 6 rioters who were convicted of assaulting law enforcement officers.
I understand that a president has the right to appoint officials who will carry out his agenda, but that does not include those who are unqualified such as Pete Hegseth, Kash Patel and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Finally, I am horrified by his treatment of Ukrainian President Zelensky. How can he say Zelensky started the war and is a dictator? He and JD Vance should be ashamed of catering to Vladimir Putin, who is so clearly a liar, dictator and murderer.
I hope people who disagree with what is going on will speak up. America does not need its first king.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
