The founding chef of Miyake and Pai Men Miyake plans to open a new Japanese restaurant and adjacent food-based market in West Bayside this fall.

Masahiko Miyake aims to launch his new restaurant concept, Aomori, on the street level of The Armature apartment building at 52 Hanover St., according to an announcement Monday from the building’s developer, Reveler Development. He’ll also be opening Aomori Kitchen + Market — featuring ready-to-go, hot and cold food and drinks, fresh pastries and desserts — in an abutting space.

Miyake is collaborating on the new venture with his son, Reo Miyake, and Reo’s partner, Helen Carter. In the planning phase for more than a year, the restaurant will feature classic Japanese dishes, with particular inspiration from Japan’s northeast region, where the city of Aomori is located.

“Our goal for Aomori restaurant is to bring Japanese soul food to Portland while incorporating local Maine ingredients,” Reo Miyake said in a news release. “Our menu will include a selection of small plates inspired by classic izakaya dishes and Japanese home cooked meals we grew up on.”

“We know that Aomori and Aomori Kitchen + Market will become important anchors within Hanover Works, West Bayside, and the greater Portland area,” said John LaLiberte, CEO of Reveler Development.
