Located in The Wyeth — a condo building at 267 U.S. Route 1, Suite 107 — the 3,800-square-foot space is a little larger than Sapporo’s previous home at 230 Commercial St. The new venue offers free parking and can accommodate up to 90 customers inside — including a 10-seat sushi bar — and an additional 45-50 on the outside patio in season.

Sapporo will now also feature a six-seat full bar serving beer, wine and cocktails, which weren’t available at the Portland location.

Co-owner Megumi Hatanaka said the menu remains mostly the same, though the restaurant has had to increase its prices between 10% and 20% to offset inflation, increased labor costs, and the expense of the buildout and lease at the new venue.

Hatanaka said the interior design of the new location features a navy color scheme accented by maple wood and bamboo pendant lights, along with watercolor-style Japanese mountain-scape wallpaper.

Sapporo had been located on the Portland waterfront for nearly 40 years. Opened by Yoshi Hayashi in 1985, it was the city’s first sushi restaurant.

For customers’ convenience, Hatanaka said Sapporo will no longer close between lunch and dinner services. Sapporo will be open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m.
