A Portland code enforcement officer has been banned from all city-owned residential buildings after being charged with assault and unlawful sexual touching, both Class D crimes.
Matthew Sarapas, 50, was put on administrative leave after he was issued a summons on March 5 by Portland police. He was released on $300 cash bail.
He is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County Superior Court on April 24 for his arraignment, according to court documents.
As a part of his bail conditions, Sarapas is not allowed to enter or return to a property on Brighton Avenue, and he is banned from city-owned residential buildings unless ordered to enter by his supervisor.
Jessica Grondin, a spokesperson for the city, confirmed that Sarapas is still on administrative leave and said she did not know why that provision is in place.
Sarapas did not return a phone message Friday afternoon asking about the charges. His attorney, Dan Wentworth, declined to speak about the case and the reasoning behind the bail conditions.
