The owner of Backwoods Burger Shack in Gorham plans to open a hot dog restaurant in Naples this May.
Rick Boyd said he aims to open Wonderdogs on May 7 in the historic building that houses Rick’s Cafe at 852 Roosevelt Trail. The 350-square-foot space was most recently Nico’s Italian Ice and Gelato.
Boyd expects to have up to 10 seats inside, as well as seating for more than 30 people outside in a covered patio and picnic area.
Wonderdogs will serve steamed all-beef, natural-casing hot dogs from Chicago’s Vienna Beef with regionally and globally inspired toppings. Boyd said the menu will include items like chili dogs; Chicago- and New York-style hot dogs; Korean dogs with housemade kimchi, spicy pulled pork and charred scallions; and Sonoran dogs with bacon, guacamole, sour cream, jalapeños and cotija cheese.
“The idea behind it is kind of like going to the state fair, with some off-the wall treats,” Boyd said, “some fun things people can enjoy on their trip to the lake, and have something to talk about when they get home.”
Some of Wonderdogs’ outside-the-box items include maple-bacon and spicy watermelon cotton candy, and “Koolickles,” which are dill pickles that have been soaked in a cherry Kool-Aid brine. The venue will also offer a selection of loaded baked potatoes.
Boyd expects to be open from May 7 through Sept. 30, seven days a week, with hours from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
