I just read Rob Knake’s April 8 op-ed about pedestrian safety in Portland. I couldn’t agree more.

Yesterday, when walking in my Libbytown neighborhood to look at the construction of the new Kiwanis Pool site, a black Lexus blew through three stop signs, each at clearly marked intersections. I guess the person was in a hurry to get home, as I saw them park in their driveway a block away from the Portland Water District headquarters on Douglass Street.

This summer, scores of kids will be going to the Dougherty Fields for swimming, soccer, the skatepark and the new playground. Will they be able to cross the street safely? We need clearly marked pedestrian crosswalks, double stop signs and police patrols to stop this unnecessary and dangerous behavior.

When I was a child and someone was driving too fast, my father used to say, “That guy is in a hurry to get home and sit down.” It didn’t make sense then. It doesn’t make sense now.
