Reading the March 30 front-page article made me cry. Where is our empathy for other people who are affected by President Trump’s policies? Perhaps those interviewed and quoted don’t realize that the elimination of the Department of Education, adjusting taxes (only down for the wealthy) and cuts to government services (try to call the Social Security office) will eventually affect them also?
I was absolutely horrified by the woman from Fairfield who believes that illegal immigrants need to be deported, just not her sister-in-law? Has she seen the news that legal immigrants are being deported? Or that people are being snatched right off the street?
I fear for my brown-skinned daughter (a citizen) whenever she is out of my sight. Fewer immigrants, more tariffs and cuts to government services will not help the economy, but will negatively affect us all.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
