John Mark Goran

FREEPORT – John Mark Goran, 74, of Freeport, passed away peacefully at his home on April 14, 2026. John is survived by his wife of 39 years, Susan Flewelling Goran, his sister Ruth Goran and her wife, Laurie Weinstein, and many nieces and nephews. He was deeply cherished by his wife, sister, his in-laws, and extended family members. He will be sorely missed by his numerous life-long friends and professional colleagues.

John was born on April 24, 1951, in Boston, to Jeanette and Melvin Goran. He graduated from Newton High School in 1969 and continued his education as a voice major at Boston Conservatory and later graduated from GTE Sylvania Tech School in 1973. His combined passion for music and technology led him to a varied career with positions as an audio/sound engineer for local radio stations and as a computer field service engineer. His dedication to community television led to related positions in the Towns of Freeport, Brunswick, and Scarborough. John’s knowledge and expertise proved invaluable as a member of the Maine Community Media Association in their development of nationally acclaimed legislation which further contributed to the growth of community communications.

John held an FCC General Class Radiotelephone License as well as an FCC Amateur Extra Class Amateur Radio License. He (K1JJS) was active in several local clubs including the Merry Meeting Amateur Radio Association and could be heard on the airwaves across the world. He used these skills to continue to support the community as an active participant in Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and held a FEMA/NIMS/ICS Type III Communications Unit Leader certification. John was an iNARTE Certified Senior Engineer and was an active member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE).

John loved animals and never met a cat or dog who didn’t immediately want to crawl into his lap or lick his face. He enjoyed traveling and exploring new places with Sue. He liked to explore new restaurants, local beers, or fine wines while listening to live music which he loved sharing with numerous friends.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for mid-June and details will be made available once completed. Burial will be private.

John and Susan have thoroughly enjoyed their 25 years in the community of Freeport, and in leu of flowers, donations in John’s memory to the Freeport Community Services at 53 Depot St., Freeport would be greatly appreciated.
