WESTBROOK – Say this about the Westbrook High football players: If they put their minds to something, they can figure it out. Lately the task was to perfect their counter play.

“We worked on that a lot in practice because we haven’t been able to execute it,” said quarterback Kyle Heath. “We nailed it this week.”

Did they ever. Time and again, the Blue Blazes sold a run heading in one direction, only to cut it back and spring a runner for big yardage.

Cale Bollig rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Collin Joyce added 93 yards and two TDs as Westbrook rolled to a 58-28 victory over Fryeburg Academy in a Western Class B game Saturday.

Heath completed 7 of 10 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns for Westbrook (3-1). Aaron Duncanson had three receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.

The Blue Blazes rolled up 448 yards of offense. Fryeburg (1-3) totaled 346.

The Raiders were led by running back Devine Dockery, who had 22 carries for 200 yards and two TDs, including one on a 64-yard run. Quarterback Andrew Rascoe completed 7 of 16 passes for 60 yards. He also ran 17 times for 60 yards and two touchdowns.

“Nobody stopped anybody,” said Fryeburg Coach Dave Turner. “We didn’t stop them and they didn’t stop us; we stopped ourselves. Every time we clawed way back in, we’d give them something.”

Defensively, Westbrook was helped by two interceptions each by Heath and Kevin Grescoviak.

Still, the counter was at the center of Westbrook’s fortunes.

In the second quarter the play put Westbrook ahead for good.

With 9:12 left, the Blazes stopped Fryeburg on downs. Next play, they sold a run to the right, springing Ben Grant’s 88-yard run to the left for a touchdown. The play was called back on a holding penalty.

Seven plays later, Joyce slipped back against the grain to score on a 20-yard TD run. Bollig’s run for the 2-point conversion put the Blazes up 16-8.

“We did work on it quite a bit in practice,” said Westbrook Coach Jeff Guerette. “It takes timing and execution.”

And sometimes, things just go your way.

After Joyce’s second TD put Westbrook up 44-22, a misplayed kickoff ended up in Westbook’s possession at Fryeburg’s 45. Seven plays later, Fryeburg took over on downs at its 15. But Grescoviak’s interception on the next play gave Westbrook the ball on the 22.

Next play, the counter freed Ben Grant for a 22-yard run to push Westbrook’s lead to 50-22.

By then, Turner knew how to gauge the game.

“We’re playing a season, not a game,” Turner said. “Our goal is to get better every week.”
