Good pitching, great defense and timely hitting carried the Westbrook fall baseball team to wins in their season opener Sunday, a doubleheader sweep of Poland, 9-1 and 8-2.

Shawn McAlpine and Shane Kelly split the pitching duties. Steve LeBel was a repeat hitter and Tayler Clouatre knocked in two runs. LeBel, Michael Haskell, Eric Anderson and Bryan Crouse each knocked in one run.

The second game featured two fielding gems. In the fourth inning, center fielder Christian Hamilton gunned down a Poland runner at the plate. The throw to catcher Tayler Clouatre ended the inning and snuffed out a potential rally.

In the sixth inning right fielder McAlpine cut down at third a runner trying to advance after McAlpine made a diving catch on a fly ball.

In the second game, the hitting attack was paced by repeat hitters Clouatre, with two RBIs and Hamilton, with one. Anderson and Haskell each had an RBI as well.

Pitchers Christian Hamilton and Joey Cook held the Poland hitters at bay.

This week (Sunday, Sept. 17) the Westbrook team will play a doubleheader with Portland at Haverty Field at 10 a.m.
