It took some late inning heroics, but the Massabesic Mustangs got their first win of the season Friday afternoon at Westbrook.
The Mustangs, who surrendered five third inning runs to give up a two-run lead, came back to score seven runs in the sixth inning for a come-from-behind 10-7 win over Westbrook. The win improves the Mustangs’ record to 1-3 and drops the Blue Blazes to 0-4 on the season.
The Mustangs’ big sixth inning rally was keyed by Jordan Dumont, who smacked a bases-loaded triple to score three runs and lead the Mustangs to victory. Dumont also scored two other runs earlier in the game.
At the outset, it appeared that Massabesic would have an easy time at Westbrook, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead, thanks to first inning RBIs by Taylor Kirker and Miranda Gerry. Pitcher Sierra Leonard was dialed in for the first two innings, allowing only one base runner (on a second inning walk to Ashlyn Bourgeois) before running into trouble in the third.
Westbrook grabbed the lead with a five-run third, getting four hits, including an RBI triple from Maria Romano to take a 5-2 lead.
Christina Pettis got things rolling for the Blazes with a one-out single. Romano then stepped the plate and smacked a long triple that scored Pettis.
Cynthia Wescott then got an RBI single and scored when the next batter, Lindsay Driscoll got a base hit that turned into an inside-the-park home run, thanks to two Mustang errors on the play, making the score 5-2 in favor of Westbrook.
Massabesic got one run back in the top of the fifth, when Dumont, who reached on a fielder’s choice, took advantage of two wild pitches to come around and score.
That set the stage for the big sixth inning for the Mustangs, who held on to win despite a two-run seventh inning rally by Westbrook that fell short.
