WELLS — On Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers’ dredge vessel Currituck will begin limited dredge operations in the Wells Harbor Federal Navigational Channel to improve shoaling problems at the entrance of the jetties, according to a prepared statement from town officials.
The Currituck will remain through the week and remove up to 5,000 cubic yards of sand. The sand will be disposed of near the shore off Wells Beach at a permitted dump area.
The shoaling problem has grown during the spring, making it a navigational hazard for boaters entering and leaving the harbor, according to a statement from the Army Corps of Engineers.
The dredge is made possible by the ACOE Navigational New England District, the federal congressional delegation, and federal and state environmental regulatory agencies. Some of the dredge operations can be viewed at the town’s website, wellstown.org.
