AUGUSTA (AP) — A 28- year-old Augusta man who police say initiated two highspeed chases that ended with a crash has turned himself in to authorities.

The Kennebec Journal reports that Steven Black surrendered Sunday at the Augusta police station.

Trooper Jesse Duda says Black fled after police attempted to stop his vehicle on Route 202 in Manchester on Feb. 4. The chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph before police broke off.

Black crashed into a tree off Pond Road near the West Gardiner line.

He escaped by fleeing across the frozen Cobbossee Lake.

Black was charged with operating after suspension, eluding an officer, driving to endanger and leaving the scene of an accident, among other related charges. He was being held on Monday on $2,000 bail.
