It took almost 20 minutes and an 8-2 deficit for Freeport to realize it wasn’t just another girls high school lacrosse game on Greely’s schedule.
But when they did, it was a little too late, as an early barrage of goals from the Rangers held up as they downed the Falcons, 13-10 at Joan Benoit Samuelson Track and Field on Wednesday.
Greely improved to 6-1 and currently sits in second place in the Class B Heal Points and will host Scarborough on Friday, at 4 p.m. Freeport falls to 4-3 and travels to Gorham for a 4p.m. game on Friday.
The visitors came out firing on all cylinders, making their shots count, led by Brooke Clement. The junior paced the attack by either scoring or assisting in the team’s first five goals to give the Rangers a quick 5-1 lead midway through the first half.
“She does great things for us,” Greely coach Becca Koelker said. “We try to get her out from behind the net more, but regardless, when she touches the ball, she makes things happen.”
A Chloe Davidson goal from a Taylor Dostie assist brought Freeport within three goals, but Greely answered soon after with three more of its own to bolt out to a commanding 8-2 lead with 7:02 left in the first half.
“It was important for us to jump out to that early lead, it helped us control the tempo,” Koelker said as the Rangers scored all eight goals on their first eight shots.
Following a Freeport timeout, the Falcons won the ensuing draw control and proceeded to pass down field where Jessie Driscoll found Dostie for the score.
After another Freeport goal and momentum swinging in Freeport’s direction, the Falcons won another draw control and junior Allison Greuel sprinted down the middle of the field where she beat Greely goalie Hannah Perfetti for the goal, making it 8-5.
Less than a minute later, Dostie found Taylor Rinaldi with a pass and Rinaldi blasted a shot home for the score, cutting the deficit to two.
“Once we started scoring, we realized we could play with them,” Rinaldi said. “Wish we could have started that sooner, but it gives us a lot of confidence to go out and play with a team like that.”
“I probably should have called a timeout a little sooner than I did, but I sometimes like to have them try to work it out,” Freeport coach Marcia Wood said. “We just talked in the timeout about how we can continue putting pressure on them and the goals would come.”
Greely’s Ellie Holt stopped the bleeding, tallying her second goal of the half, giving the Rangers a 9-6 lead at the break.
Despite trailing, the Falcons outshot Greely, 14-10, and took the draw controls, 11-5, in the opening frame.
Davidson and Margaret Perrotta opened the second half with goals for the home team in the first three minutes, bringing the Falcons within a goal, 9-8.
That was as close as Freeport got. Clement scored the next two goals, with assists from senior Jen Spencer and freshman Sam Goldburg to squander any comeback.
Clement finished with four goals and four assists in the contest, running the offense from behind net.
“I like to hang out there, it lets me see the field and I’m able to look for my teammates,” Clement said.
Each team traded a pair of goals, while Greely’s Perfetti came up with some key saves late in the game to secure the win.
“We talked about it after the game,” Wood said of her team’s effort against a strong Class B team. “ While some were not happy with the loss, we all realized that this is a good step for us and hope we can continue carrying this on for the rest of our schedule and into the Class C tournament.”
Holt registered three goals for the Rangers, while Greta VanCuran and Jayme Morrison each added a pair. Courtney Sullivan and Goldburg chipped in with a goal each.
As has been the case throughout the season, the Falcons spread their scoring around, getting two goals each from Rinaldi, Davidson, Greuel and Emma Carter. Dostie and Perrotta each netted the remaining two goals. Dostie also had three assists, while Davidson had two in the loss.
Freeport’s Cameron Pasquale made 10 saves, while her counterpart Perfetti stopped five.
Each team had 26 shots and Freeport held the advantage in draw controls, 17-8.
