Gov. Paul LePage is an open and honest man, a businessman, not a politician. His election was a message that working taxpayers are bone tired of the feel good, back scratching, wasteful spending of the liberal mindset. Now, the Legislature is playing politics with the 65 vetoes he delivered to them. I have read every one of them. He has the right perspective. The reasoning for his vetoes is founded on common sense. Why are the people we sent to Augusta voting for unfunded mandates, borrowing money (bonds) that will carry interest on repayment and be a burden to those who come behind us. Why are they intent on shoveling tax dollars out to those in this country illegally? Why pass more laws when there are already laws in place that address the issue? It is time for legislators to tighten the purse strings, stop playing political games and use some common sense. The taxpayers demand it.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
