PORTLAND (AP) — Fair- Point Communications workers unhappy with planned layoffs at the telecommunications company are planning to picket in Portland.

Union officials say members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Communications Workers of America plan to conduct informational picketing Thursday morning to protest the company’s unwillingness to compromise in talks about the recently announced layoffs of more than 200 employees in northern New England.

FairPoint announced layoff plans last month.

Union leaders have met with company representatives to discuss the process and attempt to reduce the number of layoffs. They say the cuts are unnecessary and will lower customer service quality.

More than 1,700 FairPoint Communications employees ended a four-month strike in February.
