POLAND — With teams battling for a playoff spot in Western Maine Class B, Poland and Freeport met in a key high school baseball game on Thursday.
The Knights scored four first-inning runs and survived a Falcons rally for a 4- 3 Western Maine Conference win in season finale play for both squads.
Poland improved to 9-7, while Freeport fell to 7-9 and likely out of the playoff mix.
“We had 11 seniors on this year’s squad, great senior leadership, and I feel if we just had a couple more games, we would be right there,” said Freeport coach Hank Ogilby.
Poland opened strong, scoring four runs before the first out was recorded, the key hit an RBI single by Corey Cunliffe and three consecutive walks.
Dan Burke relieved for Freeport and did the job from there, going the rest of the way on six hits, four strikeouts and no walks.
Connor Dietrich singled and scored in the third inning to get the Falcons on the board, and Brian Rhea’s RBI double in the sixth made for a 4-2 contest. Brady Davis singled to start the seventh, and the Falcons scratched a run across against Poland reliever Ethan Cailler. But, Freeport left the tying run in scoring position.
Jack Davenport added a double for the Falcons.
Cunliffe paced Poland with two hits, while starting pitcher Jake Simard earned the win on three hits, five strikeouts and two walks.
