Over the course of five days, the Freeport and York high school softball teams have played two backand forth, momentum-changing Western Maine Conference contests.

Last Wednesday, the Falcons came from 3-0 down to claim a 5-4 nineinning victory for the team’s first win at York. On Monday, extra innings were not required, but Freeport once again came from three runs down for a 7-6 victory, improving to 2-3.

“This is a huge win, and we visit Old Orchard Beach (4 p.m.), a team that is below us, so hopefully we will be 3-3,” said Freeport coach Mike Perry.

Tied 6-6 in the sixth inning after the Wildcats (1-3) scored two runs in the top of the frame, Necole Harrison reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a Stephanie Rundlett wild pitch. Amanda Miles, who was 2-for-4, singled to put runners at the corners.

Baker, who was pinch-hit for in the fourth, reentered the game and drove a Rundlett pitch to deep center field for a game-winning sacrifice fly.

Freeport pitcher Leigh Wyman (10 strikeouts, six walks, seven hits, four earned runs, 157 pitches) struck out two in the seventh before retiring the final hitter on a flyball.

“I wanted to help the team win, and I felt confident when the ball went into center field that we were going to score there,” said Baker of her game-winning RBI. “This is a good team win. It just feels good to win.”

“The game before she was 3-for-3 against York, so she has been all over York,” said Perry of Baker. “She didn’t look good in her first atbat, so I gave K.C. Breed a chance. Jill came back in and came through.”

York up 4-1

Freeport jumped on top 1-0 in the first. Lauren Cormier (2-for-3) tripled to lead off, and Harrison’s groundball brought Cormier home.

York responded in the second. Marquis MacGlashing and Hannah Brown singled, and Addy Fredette worked a two-out walk to load the bases. Lisa King, the No. 9 hitter, singled to drive in two runs for a 2-1 Wildcats lead.

Kendall Carr led off the York third with a single and scored on a long triple by Kelsey Elsemare, who later beat a throw to the plate on a grounder by Rundlett for a 4-1 edge.

Freeport answered in its half of the third. With two outs, Baker singled in Hannah Chase, and Wyman scored when an errant throw during a rundown skipped into left field. Another York error allowed Baker to score the tying run.

The Falcons made it a 6-4 game in the fourth. Cormier singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Again with two outs, Harrison (1-for-4, triple, two runs scored) drove a Rundlett pitch to left-center field for a run-scoring triple, and Harrison scored on a Miles single.

“We had some huge hits by Harrison and Jill Baker,” said Perry after his squad scored five runs with two outs. “We were able to get kids on base. We need to score runs, which has been our downfall the past two years.”

But, York refused to fold. Despite leaving 10 runners on base, the Wildcats managed to tie the game in the sixth as MacGlashing drove in a run and Kelsey Cole scored on an error to tie the game.

Rundlett went the distance for York, with five strikeouts, six walks and nine hits allowed. Carr was 2- for-4 with one run scored, while MacGlashing was 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored a run.
