When the Mt. Ararat/Brunswick wrestling team came up just short against Skowhegan in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 4 in Topsham, it was a day where things didn’t seem to come completely together.
On Saturday at the Class A North regional at Nokomis High School, the Eagles/Dragons contingent put it all together, winning the event by more than 20 points and placing several wrestlers in the top four.
“Some kids that fell a little bit short at KVACs came through,” said Mt. Ararat/Brunswick coach Erick Jensen, who will lead his squad into the State Class A Championships this upcoming Saturday at Camden Hills (9:30 a.m.). “It was a total team effort, and was nice to see. We had several nice pins and wins. Everything just clicked.”
Robert Hetherman, Jabbar Belin and Dylan Schenk captured first on Saturday, with Caden Kowalsky, Josiah Langworthy and Christian Jensen finishing second.
Hetherman pinned Colby Gardner of Morse in the 170- pound final, while Belin captured an 8-4 decision over Ian Henderson of Camden Hills at 126. Schenk, at 220, won by decision over Oxford Hills’ Jeffrey Worster, 5-2.
Brett Raio (132) finished third at 132 pounds, while Evan Smith was fourth at 195.
Morse’s Donovan Rector claimed second for the Shipbuilders at 132, while Isaiah Cogswell (138) and Raz Baltazar (145) took third. Jordan Douglass (106) and Mick Swanson (126) were fourth.
Also, Wiscasset’s Sam Strozier had a solid meet, taking second at 152 after a pinfall loss to Quinton Richards of Nokomis in the title match.
